Guide to Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is a very popular holiday destination, especially
during the winter months.
With about 830.000 citizens Gran Canaria is the second largest
Canary Island. Only Tenerife has slightly more citizens.
Capital city Las Palmas is a modern metropolis with 380.000
citizens. Fortunately is still possible to visit the 500 year
old ancient town Vegueta, which is now a quarter in Las Palmas.
The number of annual visitors in Gran Canaria is over two
million. Most of them stay in the southern part of the island,
where the climate is significant better (more sun and warmer).
It is traditional and well-known resorts like Playa del Inglés,
Maspalomas, Puerto Rico, San Agustín, Arguineguin and Puerto
Mogán that attracts the main part of the tourists. However, in
the recent years some new promising resorts like
Playa de Amadores,
Bahia Feliz and Meloneras have turned up.
The northern part of the island has no major resorts but with is
beautiful green vegetation it is definitely worth a visit. On
the way to the north it is recommendable to drive through the
mountains and the idyllic ancient villages with brightly
coloured clematis climbing up the mountains.
