Puerto Rico is the second largest
and sunniest holiday resort Gran Canaria has to offer. No wonder
it is so popular with sun-seeking tourists.
Originally Puerto Rico was a small
fishing community, but in the 1970’s the pleasant climate was
finally put to good use, with the building of several hotels.
Later, these began to climb the mountainsides, and today there
is a vast selection of different hotels in Puerto Rico.
Beaches in Puerto Rico
The artificially constructed beach in Puerto Rico is
approximately 350 metres in length and made up of fine, golden
sand. The beach is closely populated by sun loungers, but there
are places where it is possible to lie down with a towel. The
beach has relatively shallow waters and is very child-friendly.
From the adjacent harbour in
Puerto Rico you can paraglide, rent jet-skis, speedboats and
much more.
In the neighbouring bay you will
find the smaller holiday resort of Playa de Amadores. Playa de
Amadores has a fabulous powder-white beach with enticing
turquoise waters. A beautiful path has been laid along the
coastline to Playa de Amadores, and the walk takes about 25
minutes.
Restaurants and nightlife in
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico has countless restaurants. They are primarily
concentrated in three areas; the two centres ’Puerto Rico’ and ’Europe’,
as well as right down by the beach.
The nightlife is lively with a
great selection of bars and discos, again mostly in the centres.
Activities in Puerto Rico
From the harbor in Puerto Rico it is possible to take a deep sea
fishing charter. The main fishing season is from May to
September and various kinds of marlin, swordfish, sharks and
tuna are fished.
There are several ferries sailing
on scheduled routes to Puerto de Mogan and Arguineguin. The trip
along the Gran Canarian coast is interesting in itself and it is
definitely worth spending a day in the picturesque resort of
Puerto de Mogan.
If you want to try something
different, it is possible to spend an unforgettable day on the
Atlantic aboard one of Europe’s largest catamarans, which is
departing from the harbor in Puerto Rico.
For the children there is a water
park in Puerto Rico, and in the town centre there is a lovely
park with playgrounds, carrousels and more.
